The Punjab government today sanctioned Rs 6.49 crore for carrying out preventive flood protection works to tackle emergency situations at different critical points on embankments in flood-prone districts of Ropar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Sangrur, Kapurthala, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Barnala following the increased water level in various rivers and reservoirs due to heavy rainfall in the region.
A decision to this effect was taken by the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal while presiding over a high level meeting of deputy commissioners and heads of various departments. Expressing concern over the situation, Badal directed all the deputy commissioners to strengthen embankments of all drains, rivers and canals passing through their respective districts.
