Gandhi's grandson to head Shimla institute

Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi is the new chairman of the governing body of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla and president of its society.

Gandhi, 67, has been appointed for a period of three years . He is the youngest grandson of Mahatama Gandhi and has held many important administrative posts, including that of the country’s ambassador

Gandhi joined the IAS in 1968 and served till 1985. He was secretary to the vice president of India and joint secretary to the president of India from 1987 to 1992. In 1992 he took voluntary retirement from the IAS and became the minister of culture in the High Commission of India, UK, and also the director of the Nehru Centre, London.

In 1996, he was appointed the high commissioner of India to South Africa and Lesotho.

The following year he took up the post of secretary to the president of India. The year 2002 saw him appointed as the high commissioner of India in Sri Lanka. In 2002 he became the ambassador of India to Iceland and Norway. In 2004 he took over as the governor of West Bengal.

He has authored several books .
