The government has said gas from RIL's offshore block KG-D6 basin to power plants has resulted in improved electricity supply situation in the country.
It said power supply improved during April to November this year compared to the same period in 2008-09 after the allocation of KG basin gas to power plants on a priority basis.
"The power deficit both in terms of energy and peak power in India during April to November this year was 9.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent compared to 10.8 per cent and 13.8 respectively," Minister of State for Power Bharatsinh Solanki said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha yesterday.
Further, Solanki said, "Since the gas production from RIL's KG-D6 gas blocks in the month of April this year, gas has been allocated to power sector on priority."
"The gas based generation during April to November period this year increased to 62,036 million units compared to 59,430 million units during the same period last year, representing a growth of about 31.4 per cent," he said.
However, despite improvement, the gap between demand and supply continues to be acute, Power Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said in the Rajya Sabha yesterday that the energy and peak shortages during April-November, 2009 period were 52,878 million units and 14,672 MW respectively.
