A Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) delegation is on a visit to Sydney to look out for business opportunities for Indians in Australia. |
The team from the umbrella organisation of trade and commerce bodies in the state met P P Shukla, High Commissioner of India to Australia. |
The Indian High Commission in Australia sought the help of the GCCI for the success of the 'Gujarat Week 2005'. |
Tentatively, the Gujarat Week is being planned in Australia during the Navratri festival in 2005 to facilitate cultural, bilateral and industry exchange. |
The focus during the Gujarat Week will be on the gems and jewellery, textiles, garments, handicrafts, pharmaceuticals and chemicals sectors, where Gujarat has a strong presence. |
The delegation also met M Ganapathy, Consul General of India at Sydney. He said the aim of Gujarat Week 2005 is to broaden bilateral exchange with India through Gujarat. |
Ganapathy added that, while some Australian companies are already been working with their Indian counterparts in mineral segments like copper and coal, there are several business opportunities in the precious metals, stones and jewellery segments. |
Shukla said that, besides Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, Indian businessmen should also look at Adelaide for business opportunities, as it has been adjudged as the best business destination in Australia. |
He told the GCCI delegation that Japan, Korea and China are Australia's main business partners. |
Since the distance of these countries from Australia is just about the same as that of India and Australia, India should look for a greater share of business with Australia. |
The GCCI team is expected to be back on October 13. |
