Union Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi has put in his papers after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee demanded his resignation following a hike in train fares.
According to unconfirmed news reports, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has already accepted Trivedi's resignation.
However, Trivedi has denied reports that that he had put in his papers. He made it clear that he would resign the moment the Prime Minister or Mamata Banerjee ask him to do.
Trivedi said he had to answer questions in Parliament today and he would be doing that. "I will not leave my duty," he told Bengali news channel Star Ananda.
Yesterday, Mamata Banerjee asked the Prime Minister to remove Trivedi after he took the bold decision of an across-the-board increase in passenger fares, the first since 2002.
The reports say that Trinamool leader Mukul Roy could replace Trivedi as the Railway Minister.
