Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi today said to remove corruption, the political system in the country should give a "strong voice" to the people.

"Political system in the country should give a strong voice to the people. Therefore, organisations like the Youth Congress should open their doors to the common man," Gandhi said addressing a Youth Congress membership drive rally at Ampati, the home constituency of Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

He said the change in the structure of the Youth Congress from nominated members to elected members will give an opportunity for youngsters to participate in politics at the Centre and fight elections.

Asking youths to participate in central level politics, he insisted that "if you have a voice at the Centre, it will speed-up development in your state".

"Today there is a tendency to look to modernity and technology. Technology will move our country in the 21st century. For this, we need new ideas, new thinking," he said at the 40-minute rally which was attended by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, CWC member in charge of Meghalaya Dhaniram Shandil and AICC secretary Sanjay Bapna.

Gandhi went on to praise the traditional institutions and said traditional ideas will also help the country move forward.

"There is a lot to learn from traditional institutions. Traditional ideas can take the country forward in the 21st century. For the Congress, every part of the country is important. Every part has something to give to the country," Gandhi said.

Gandhi also lauded the matrilineal society in Meghalaya and said "the pro-active role played by the women in Meghalaya has set an example for the whole country".
