Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has asked the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to expedite the completion of the much delayed East-West Corridor road project in the state. The project got delayed due to multiple reasons like insurgency, bad weather, delays in land acquisition, etc. leading to cost escalation as well.

"The progress on the East-West Corridor is slow. It requires periodic review, evaluation, monitoring and assessment from time to time to pursue matters to their logical conclusions," said Gogoi.

The scheduled completion date of the 670-km stretch of the East-West Corridor project, which lies in Assam, has now been fixed for December 2014. So far 431 km of the corridor in Nagaon-Daboka-Lanka-Udali section has been completed, while another 63 km length is likely to be ready by mid this year. The physical progress of the construction of the bridge over river Brahmaputra in Guwahati is around 60 per cent complete. The 3,300km long four-lane East-West Corridor starts from Porbandar in Gujarat and ends at Silchar in Assam and passes through Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal.

"Timely execution of works and completing them within the stipulated timeframe is a must to avoid cost escalation and to hasten the pace of economic development," said Gogoi.

For efficient implementation of road projects in Assam, the chief minister said the department should start an incentive scheme for those who carrying out timely execution of works and punishment to those failing to complete the projects. "Those who can complete the works before the scheduled timeframe must be awarded incentives. There should not be any lame excuses for failing to complete the works. If only one has genuine reasons for the delay, he may be let off," he said.

Gogoi said improvement in surface communication had helped the state contain insurgency "to a great extent".
