Even as the two-judge Bench of the Supreme Court today referred the OBC quota case to a larger Constitution Bench, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said the government was committed to implementing the quota in central educational institutions from this academic year only. |
Terming the Supreme Court decision in the right direction, Singh said, "Our effort will be to implement the OBC quota from this year only. Obviously, it depends on the apex court's final decision on the matter." |
Singh said the government would try to get the Supreme Court stay on the quota vacated. |
"The only way the OBC quota can be implemented now is through the vacation of the stay," Singh said. |
The statement indicates that the UPA government is in no mood for a caste-based census. On March 29, a two-member Bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice LK Panta had stayed the implementation of the quota and questioned the data on the basis of which the figure of 27 per cent was reached. |
