The government will soon amend a 142-year-old law to make it contemporary with the phenomenal growth of the print media in the country.
“Though the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867, has been marginally amended several times between 1870 and 1983, the times have changed and media representatives have also desired that the Act be contemporised,” Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni said.
She was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the All India Editors Conference on Social and Infrastructure issues here.
The Centre has also convened a conference of state information ministers next month in New Delhi to discuss different issues related to the media industry, along with the proposed amendment to the Act.
The new title for the Act will be Press and Registration of Publication (PRP) Act, 2009.
