The Gujarat government has decided to develop the Metoda industrial area, near Rajkot, as a 'Golden Industrial Park'.

The chief minister Narendra Modi, in the recently announced industrial policy, had put special emphasis on development of the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) areas. The policy envisages a special cell and separate funds for the development of GIDC areas.

Kishorbhai Kadwani, president, GIDC (Lodhika) Industrial Association, said the industrial area, which is spread over 424 hectares of land and houses 1,200 industrial plots, will be developed by paving more roads and providing better electrification.

More than 400 industries operate from the area and around 25 of them are export-oriented units.

Kadwani said 25 per cent of the total project cost will be borne by the industrial association (Lodhika) as stipulated by the government. The park's daily water requirement of 61 lakh litres will be met by arranging supply from Narmada canal at an additional cost of Rs 2.37 crore.

Dhanshukhbhai Vora, honorary secretary, Greater Rajkot Chamber of Commerce, said the work on the project will start after securing the final approvals.
