Maharashtra government today announced that a students accident insurance scheme would be implemented in non-aided schools.

School Education Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil informed the Legislative Council that the Rajiv Gandhi Student Accident Scheme, which is already in force in aided schools, would also be implemented in non-aided schools.

Replying to a question on the issue, the minister assured that the 'tedious process of applying for the scheme would be streamlined in consultation with the Law and Judiciary Department.'

Leader of the Opposition Pandurang Phundkar said the scheme is not known in rural areas and students do not get its benefit.

Patil said the government has paid Rs two crore in the last five years for the scheme. Shiv Sena MLC Deepak Sawant said students don't know that insurance is also paid for loss of school bag, cycle and spectacles.
