Akin to the coup N Chandrababu Naidu stage-managed in getting the prestigious Indian School of Business to Hyderabad, the Y S Rajasekhara Reddy government in the state is now looking at convincing the prestigious Stanford University to set up base in the city.

According to highly placed officials the state government is planning to rope in the services of the influential American-Indian venture capitalist Vinod Khosla to lobby for the Stanford campus on its behalf.

In fact, a meeting has already been arranged between chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and Vinod Khosla at Delhi on 11 December.

"Besides approaching Vinod Khosla to use his good offices for our cause, we have also been planning to contact some of the American Senators and some Stanford alumni to persuade the University authorities to come to Hyderabad," a senior government official told Business Standard.

"Our efforts will not end at just what the government could offer for the establishment of the campus. We may also raise a donation of, say $50 million, from the Andhra NRIs who are very eager to support the government's effort, for setting up of the campus by the Stanford University," the official said.

The government is expected to offer all the infrastructure facilities similar to that offered to the Indian School of Business (ISB) by the previous government led by N Chandrababu Naidu, who used all the influence he commanded to bring ISB to Hyderabad.

If the state government does manage to snag/convince the university officials to consider Hyderabad, the city could well transform itself into one of the leading cities in the country on par with the national capital and probably nudge ahead of home grown competition from southern counterpart Bangalore.

Interestingly, when the Stanford University officials first came down to India for their preliminary visit, it was restricted to just Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.
