The Union Ministry of Forests and Environment has granted environment clearance to the proposed 243-Mw Kashang hydropower project in the tribal district of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, official sources said.
The project is being executed by the state-owned HP Power Corporation Ltd.
Himachal Pradesh has already posed the first stage of 65-Mw for funding beforethe Asian Development Bank (ADB) and has succeeded in obtaining Rs 297 crore.
The green clearance in now expected to speed up work on the project.
The government has requested for the execution of the second and third stage integrated project of the remaining 130 Mw.
A detailed project report has already been prepared and submitted to the ADB for sanction of Rs 453 crore to execute the entire project.
