Gujarat government-owned seven public sector units (PSUs) owe Rs 108.25 crore as sales tax as on June 30, 2008, said the state government.
In last two years as on June 30, 2008, these seven PSUs paid Rs 346.48 crore as sales tax while Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) has paid highest sales tax of Rs 298.31 crore, the government said in a written reply to one unstarred questioned asked by independent MLA Ranchhod Mer.
The PSUs which owe the sales tax to the state government include Gujarat Small Industries Corporation (GSIC) Rs 56.31 cr, GCEL Gandhinagar Rs 2.46 cr, GMDC Rs 1.23 cr, Gujarat State Fertiliser Corporation (GSFC) Rs 39.15 cr, GCEL Vadodara Rs 6.09 cr, HSFC Surat Rs 2.56 cr and Gujarat State Forest Development Corporation (GSFDC) Rs 0.45 cr.
Apart from GMDC, other PSUs which paid the sales tax in last two years include GSFC Vadodara Rs 38.66 cr, GSFC Surat Rs 5.44 cr, GSFDC Rs 1.71 cr.
The state government has stated that three PSUs have approached the High Court challenging the government's notice for payment of sales tax and the High Court has granted stay on the matter.
