Gujarat has taken a lead in the country in the implementation of Centre's project on providing safe drinking water in the state's 13,984 villages, a government official said.
Under the 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-12), an amount of Rs 11 crore had been allocated to the state for implementing this programme. Talking to PTI on phone, Jai Pal Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Water and Sanitation Organisation (WASMO), a Gujarat Government agency, said villagers are being trained to monitor potable water qualities.
They are being told to ensure chlorination of water before it is being used. For this purpose, a simple-to-use kit is being provided to each village, he said, adding that the kits have been distributed to water quality teams and water committees in the villages.
