Below Poverty Line (BPL) consumers in Gujarat will now get electricity at a cheaper rate. Gujarat government today announced relief in electricity tariff for consumers of BPL category. Around 20 lakh BPL consumers reside in urban and rural areas of the state.
Announcing the electricity reliff today in the state assembly Saurabh Patel, energy minister of Gujarat, said that BPL consumers would be charged Rs. 1.50 per unit for the first 30 units of electricity consumed by them. As a result, BPL consumers in urban and rural areas will get a benefit of Rs. 1.20 per unit and Rs. 0.70 per unit respectively.
"The incentives will come in force from the month of February", he informed the state assembly. Gujarat government had made some suggestions to power transmission companies so that some relief in electricity charges could be offered to BPL consumers in the state.
