Non-resident Gujaratis (NRGs), who visit their hometowns at least once a year, have no other option but to purchase modern jewellery from international markets at a much costlier rate.
An estimated five lakh NRGs arrive in Gujarat every year and purchase traditional jewellery. After Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Gujarat is the third largest consumer of gold in the country.
WGC, which promotes the use of jewellery, says that even if half of these NRGs purchase gold worth $500 each, the state will earn up to Rs 150 crore a year.
