The Gujarat governor Sundar Singh Bhandari has recently approved the Gujarat Gas Act, 2001, providing for setting up of the Gujarat Gas Regulatory Authority (GGRA) to create a statutory framework to regulate supply and distribution of gas in the state.
The relevant Bill was passed by the state government in the March Assembly session.
The ordinance moved by the Gujarat government to bring this new law into force was kept in abeyance for over eight months as the state governor was not willing to sign it and he insisted that first the state Assembly should pass the pioneering Act.
Sources say that as the law on gas was essentially believed to be a subject of the Centre, the governor wanted to first confirm whether it was with the state government
