The Gujarat government has submitted a proposal to the central government seeking approval for a proposed greenfield international airport in Dhulera district, which falls along the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

"We have already got 1,700 hectares of land for the proposed airport. Our proposal is pending with the government, but we do not know when it will be cleared," said Kishore Rao, secretary, tourism, industries and mines development, Gujarat.

Rao said according to the proposal, Airports Authority of India is to develop the airport, but declined to give further details.

He was talking to reporters on the sidelines of the launch of Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors' Summit 2009 scheduled in January.

The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor is being set up jointly by the Gujarat government and Japan, as part of the 'Japan India Special Economic Partnership Initiative', signed in 2006.

It envisages an investment of $90 billion over seven years, and will include development of industrial clusters and rail, road, port, and air connectivity in the states along the corridor.

The first phase of the project is to be completed by 2012. The project had received Union cabinet nod in August 2007.
