Gujarati handicraft comes to Dubai

Aiming to enable women and artisans to be catalysts of sustainable economic and social change, Gramshree, an NGO is organising a three-day exhibition in Dubai showcasing the talent of underprivileged women and artisans from Gujarat.

The exhibition 'Craftroots' was opened by Anar Patel, trustee of Gramshree and Sanjay Verma, Consul-General of India in Dubai.

The collaborative initiative between Gramshree, Khamir CRC and Sahaj is showcasing the contemporary and traditional products handcrafted by the artisans of Gujarat.

The collection includes hand-woven, embroidered and patchwork cotton and silk dresses, kurtas, tunics, sarees, blouses and home furnishings, bags, bells, bamboo and paper file folders and other accessories.

"Gujarat has an extremely rich art culture and the traditions of the state are simply mesmerising. The talent that is borne in the internal rural Gujarat is exceptional in terms of quality, design and beauty. This talent is yet to be fully explored and given its due credit," Anar Patel said.

Gramshree aims to support the industry by taking the Gujarati women and artisans to a global platform.

"Dubai offers the right audience who can recognise the unmatched beauty and expertise of the handicraft on display. We are hopeful of a very positive response from this market, and welcome each and every individual to come and experience the joie de vivre of rural Gujarat," she added.

This initiative by Gramshree, Sahaj and Khamir CRC is further supported by bodies like institutes, designers and architectures.

With an aim to create awareness about the rich tradition of crafts in Gujarat, 'Craftroots' endeavours to take the Gujarati art and talent to the world through various initiatives and revive their exceptional culture and way of life.
