The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the district magistrate and superintendent of East Midnapore district to ensure security at two berths in Haldia Dock Complex of Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) for smooth functioning.

Justice Dipankar Dutta directed the DM and SP to ensure deployment of police personnel for 24 hours at berth two and eight of the Haldia Dock Complex to ensure smooth cargo operations. The court also directed that no rally or dharna could be held within 100 metres of the main gates of the working area of ABG.

ABG Haldia moved the High Court seeking a direction to the state to ensure proper law and order at the two berths.

Around 275 workers, who worked for ABG and been laid off, were allegedly agitating demanding reinstatement.

ABG Haldia had earlier given a notice to KoPT that it would not handle cargo at its Haldia Dock’s berth two and eight for allegedly not being provided 7.5 lakh tonne dry bulk cargo monthly as per agreement.

The issue was resolved after KoPT moved the High Court and a solution was reached and ABG Haldia decided on continuation of work there.
