The West Bengal government will set up a highway development corporation in line with the National Highway Authority of India for development of roads and allied infrastructure in the state.

Commerce and Industries minister Partha Chatterjee said after a cabinet meeting on Friday that Rs 50 crore had been initially sanctioned for the purpose.

The road development and repair, which was earlier looked into by the PWD, would now be taken care of by the new state body, he said.

Chatterjee said that repair of damaged roads and linking of small roads with the main roads would go simulaneously with the new construction activities on the pattern of the golden quadrilateral project of the Centre.

The minister said that an MoA had been prepared for the purpose and work would start on a PPP model.
