CII Northern region, in association with the Indian Institute of Skill Development is setting up a skill development centre in the industrial town of Parwanoo in Himachal Pradesh. The courses are to start soon.

The Centre will explore higher standards in the field of vocational education to help create and train about 16,000 employable youth in the state, in the next two years.

This was announced recently at a CII meet by the chamber’s Director General Chandrajit Banerjee.

“The key objective of this centre is to provide quality industry oriented courses,” he said.

The trades have been indentified for the preferred light engineering, hydro, construction and tourism sectors.

“Latest machinery and equipment, including heavy machines for workshops and practical training have already been ordered,” Banerjee said.

The advisory board for the project consists of industry members who will help with internships, placements and revisions of courses. Each centre will be run by atleast 15 staff members, including the faculty.

The cource will commence at Parwanoo by June this year.

Around 16,000 sq feet of floor area has already been taken on lease. This will be used for training on heavy machinery.

There are around 5,000 industrial units in the region at Parwanoo, Baddi, Barotiwala, Nalagarh, Solan and Kala Amb.

Majority of the industry is from the manufacturing segment.

There is a huge demand for trained people in this booming industrial zone.

It is mandatory for the industry in the state to employ at least 70 per cent local youth.

But the industry has been crying foul for long saying most of the local youth are not skilled enough to be provided jobs. The institue is supposed to cater to that need.
