Karnataka housing minister Katta Subrahmanya Naidu has vowed to complete building houses for those affected by last year’s floods, by the end of December this year.

Speaking to reporters here, Naidu said he would quit his post if his mission was not fulfilled. He expressed confidence that the construction would be completed within the stipulated time and the displaced will be rehabilitated. He said, he was proud of the performance of the BJP government in the state and said it had carried out a lot of development works. On the other hand, other states had taken years to rehabilitate those affected by natural calamities.

On Congress taking out the padayatra to Bellary, Katta said the party was resorting to tactics like padayatra as an expiation for its sins. “BJP will not bother about such padayatras. It will not affect our party in any way,” Katta asserted.

Earlier, the minister laid the foundation stone for a housing project under the ‘Namma Mane’ scheme at Lakamanahalli area of Dharwad. Speaking on the occasion, he said 200,000 houses would be built under the scheme in the first phase in the state. Under the Vajpayee Housing Scheme, 100,000 houses will be built in the urban areas, he added. The Centre has received Rs 500 crore for creating the basic infrastructure in slums under the Rajiv Awas Yojana and the deputy commissioners of all districts have been asked to prepare a plan.
