Jain, who launched Supergloss 5-in1, an enamel paint for wood and metal surfaces, in Gujarat on Sunday, said that ICI aims at doubling its share in the enamel market of the country.

Claiming that Supergloss 5-in1 is the first of its kind in the country, Jain said the paint has a glossy finish, anti-yellowing system, long life and has been manufactured with the link bond technology of ICI Research.

According to Jain, ICI India is the only Indian paint company that manufactures paints without any traces of lead, that is known to have harmful impacts on humans.

He stated that Gujarat figures prominently on the company's growth plans. "For every paint manufacturer, the western belt and the southern belt are the most profitable."

He said while ICI will strengthen its base in major cities of Gujarat, attempts will be made to reach semi-urban and rural areas as well.

Supergloss 5-in-1, Jain said, will also be marketed globally and this is the 16th centre in India where the enamel paint has been launched.

"We want to make inroads into the enamel market of the domestic paint industry. We already have a 10 per cent share in this segment and wish to add another 10 per cent of the share," Jain said.

He added that ICI will continue to consolidate its position in the refinishing segment of the paints industry.

ICI, a Rs 800 crore company, derives about Rs 400 crore of its business from the paints division.

The domestic decorative paints industry is valued at around Rs 4,000 crore per year and ICI is the fourth largest player in this category. In the refinishing segment (mainly paints for automobiles), though, ICI is the leader. India is the biggest enamel paint market in the world.

While world over, especially in developed countries, the paints industry has been growing at the rate of the gross domestic product, in countries such as India and China, the industry has been witnessing a double digit growth, Jain said.

"People are now willing to pay for quality. It is an exciting phase for the Indian paints industry and ICI is making all efforts to cash in on this opportunity," he said.

ICI India manufactures and markets paints, speciality chemicals, nitro-cellulose, rubber chemicals and adhesives and industrial starch.

The company, through its joint ventures, also manufactures and markets fragrances and flavours.
