The joint survey of the land to be acquired for expansion of Hubli airport commenced here on November 30. The representatives of Residents' Welfare Association joined the district administration in the survey.

The move comes in the wake of a meeting convened by Dharwad deputy commissioner M S Srikar on Nov 29 with the owners of 100-odd houses, whose houses have come under the master plan.

The owners seemed to have agreed to the consensual acquisition of their properties if the compensation offered was "fair and reasonable".

Five representatives of Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) of the colonies, to be acquired for the expansion work as part of the master plan prepared by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), joined the survey team.

Srikar informed the residents that under the revised master plan the number of houses to be affected remained between 100 and 120 as the additional land to be acquired was agricultural land.

He impressed upon the owners of the properties that it would be mutually beneficial to the district administration and the owners if the latter agreed for the consensual acquisition instead of acquisition under the Land Acquisition Act. This would also avoid litigation and delay.

The owners agreed to the suggestion subject to the condition that the compensation was fair and reasonable taking into consideration the prevailing land and building costs. The survey team would finalise the list of properties actually affected by the project.

Srikar advised the residents not to listen to middlemen who were falsely promising them that their properties would be excluded or a better compensation package in case the acquisition was unavoidable.

The DC said he had asked the property owners to approach the district administration directly and get any of their doubts clarified.

The AAI had prepared a master plan in September, which envisages acquisition of 461 acres of additional land to upgrade Hubli airport as a national and 650 acres to make it an international facility.
