The International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) has commissioned a 40,000-litre per day fuel ethanol and extra-neutral alcohol re-distillation plant at Mohammed Shahpur village in Medak district. |
The $7-million project, to convert juice from the sweet sorghum stalk into bio-ethanol, was initiated by Icrisat and Rusni Distillery. |
"With the fuel prices skyrocketing, there is an increasing demand for bio-fuels like ethanol. Sweet sorghum being a water-efficient crop grown in the semi-arid tropics, can serve as an excellent source for ethanol, while still meeting the food, feed and fodder needs of small farmers," Icrisat director-general William D Dar stated in a press release on Wednesday. |
The ethanol from sweet sorghum project would benefit around 3,000 farmers of Medak district, he added. |
A similar project has also been initiated in Kampala, Uganda, by a private sector company ""JN Agritech International Limited, and the partnership with the Uganda company was built by Rusni Distillery with the support the Agri-Business Incubator (ABI) at Icrisat, Dar said. |
