The concept of green buildings assumes significance in the light of rising greenhouse emissions and the developed countries are responsible for emission of a large quantity of green house gases, said Sourabh Garg, Orissa industries secretary and chairman, Orissa Industrial infrastructure Development Corporation (Idco).
“Due to large scale emissions of green house gases, the earth’s temperature is rising and if this trend continues, the ice caps will melt and the sea level will rise after some years. If this happens, it will submerge most parts of Bangladesh and there will be an exodus of Bangladeshi migrants to India”, he added.
Garg was speaking at a training programme on green buildings and LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) rating system, organised by Idco on January 30. The training programme was attended by S Srinibas and SK Nandyal of the CII-Godrej Green Building Centre.
Speaking on the occasion, Vishal Dev, managing director, Idco said that such training programmes would help the engineers and managers of Idco to develop an environmental management system which will fulfill the requirement of ISO-14001 which Idco has acquired over the years. In India, the CII-Godrej Green Building Centre is the first platinum rated green building outside USA. At present, around 350 green buildings are being constructed across the country. The green buildings cause 30-50 per cent reduction in power consumption, 20-30 per cent reduction in potable water consumption and also reduction in maintenance costs of buildings.
