NATIONAL POPULATION REGISTER
How do you get it?
Data of individuals collected during Census 2011 are now in an electronic database. To register for NPR, individuals have to visit enrolment camp to furnish biometric attributes - photograph, ten fingerprints and two iris images.
What is it used for?
This is a comprehensive identity database of India's citizens. NPR will contain individual's demographic data, biometric data and Aadhaar number. It will be mandatory for every Indian to register for NPR.
Documents needed:
Acknowledgement slip given during enumeration in Census 2011 has to be carried to enrolment camp. For biometric enrolment, EPIC number, passport number, ration card number, etc. are also being collected from each household, if available. The intimation slip (Know Your Residence + Form) should be filled in for these additional data fields and carried to the camp.
DRIVING LICENCE
How do you get it?
A written test on road rules plus on-road driving test backed by proof of residence and age
What is it used for?
Right to drive a motor vehicle in any public place for a particular category of vehicle.
PAN CARD
How do you get it?
You will need photograph, proof of identity and proof of address
What is it used for?
Shows 10-digit alphanumeric number, issued by the Income- tax Department, that is mandatory for financial transactions and tax-related matters.
RATION CARD
How do you get it?
You need proof of residence and proof of antecedent
What is it used for?
Part of the Public Distribution System, these are of three types: Antyodaya (for the poorest of the poor), Below Poverty Line and Above Poverty Line. Based on economic status, people can get subsidised food, sugar and kerosene, etc, with these cards.
