The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) and Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote and enhance academic interaction and collaboration between the two institutes. Being autonomous institutions of national importance, both IIT-Gn and PRL are involved in teaching and research in several common areas.

To maximise use of resources available, the two institutes signed a MoU on November 15, 2011 to promote academic interactions and collaborations for the benefit of students and researchers.

"The MoU will facilitate exchange of students and faculty and allow for collaboration between scientists and engineers of both institutions. Faculty from both institutions will also be encouraged to give lectures and teach courses at the partnering institutions. Given the academic strengths and diverse areas of expertise of both the institutions it is envisaged that this cooperation will lead to fruitful collaborations amongst the faculty and an enriching experience for the students," said Sudhir Jain, director of IIT-Gn. Further, a joint Ph. D. programme of IIT-Gn and PRL has also been initiated, where participating students from both institutions will obtain their degrees from IIT-Gn but may take required courses from either institute, and follow a programme recognized by both institutions.
