With its "look east" policy bearing fruit, India will strive to take economic co-operation with Asean to a new high as Southeast Asian countries are emerging as new magnets and new pole of growth and stability in the world.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who arrived here today on a four-day visit to participate in the India-Asean summit and the first east Asia summit said he would use the trip to tap the large savings in Southeast and east Asia to further the quest for foreign investment in India.

Setting at rest the "misconception" that India and China were emerging as rivals in the economic and political area, Singh said the bilateral relationship was progressing in the right direction.

"There is a misconception that India and China are competitors and this is not true," Singh told journalists accompanying him.

"India's relations with China was emerging including on border issue on the basis of agreed principles. Our relationship is emerging in the right direction. We are making progress on trade as well as border," Singh said.

He made it clear that there was no rivalry between India and China and the two were partners in pushing up growth and prosperity in the region.

In a statement before his departure, the Prime Minister had said, "the first east Asia summit is the beginning of a process that brings together countries with increasing inter-linkages and growing inter-dependence,"

"It is our expectation that the summit will articulate a collective long-term vision for shaping the regional architecture and promoting community-building," he said in a statement before leaving for Kuala Lumpur.

"The India-Asean summit is an occasion to review the progress that has been made in our relationship with Asean countries and consider new initiatives for co-operation that we can undertake jointly," he said.

During his stay in Kuala Lumpur, Singh will hold discussions with several leaders on strengthening bilateral ties.

He will also interact with local business leaders besides addressing the special leaders dialogue organised by the Asean Business Advisory Council.
