India May Seek Mfn Status From Pakistan

India is likely to seek most favoured nation (MFN) status from Pakistan in lieu of a similar status having been accorded by it.

New Delhi sees non reciprocity by Pakistan on the most favoured nation issue as a violation of obligations under the multilateral trade rules.

Commerce ministry officials said it was a long-pending demand from India, but Pakistan had not kept its side of the promise.

However, despite strained relations in the past few years, India and Pakistan have contested their case together on multilateral trade issues in the World Trade Organisation. Officials said even greater co-ordination could be achieved if relations improved.
