India requires over 52 mn tonnes of fertiliser: Govt

The government today said the country is not self-sufficient in meeting fertiliser requirement of over 52 million tonnes during 2009-10.

Fertiliser demand is at 52.05 million tonnes for the year 2009-10, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Srikant Kumar Jena said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The demand during Kharif 2009-10 was at 25.47 million tonnes and  26.58 million tonnes for Rabi, he added.

He said the country is not self-sufficient to meet the fertiliser requirement and is 100 per cent dependent on imports for potash.

On fertiliser subsidy, Jena said, this year till November Rs 44,270.83 crore has been disbursed. The expenditure on fertiliser subsidy during 2008-09, was at Rs 99,494.71 crore, he added.
