India and Zambia have emphasised the need to enhance their bilateral ties and cooperation in trade and commerce while referring to the special and historic relationship between both the countries.

"India's partnership with Zambia is an important component of the country's larger vision of close, cooperative and multi-sectoral partnership with African countries. It encompasses political, security, economic, science and technology, human resource development and cultural sectors," Vice President Hamid Ansari said at a banquet given in his honour by his Zambian counterpart George Kunda last night.

"India and Zambia share common perceptions on the major issues before the international community today. Our engagements have extended to regional and global forum including the UN, the Non Aligned  Movement, Southern African Development Communities, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, and the African Union."

"Both the countries seek to ensure that in all these matters, the interests of developing countries are kept uppermost and the socio-economic developmental requirements of our countries are guaranteed," said Ansari.

Zambian Vice President George Kunda said India's economic growth continues to be an inspiration for Zambia and the rest of the world.

"We, in Zambia, are proud to be associated with a country like India."
