Indian Bank today said it had introduced bio-metric ATMs for the first time in the country to help illiterate persons access their accounts easily.
"We have opened 11 bio-metric ATMs in Tamil Nadu on a pilot basis," Indian Bank Chairman and Managing Director M S Sundararajan said after inaugurating a bio-metric ATM at the Mutyalampadu branch here.
These ATMs would help illiterate persons especially women Self Help Groups (SHGs) to access accounts by just using thumb impressions, Sundararajan said adding another such ATM would be opened in the city soon.
Interest rates had already come down considerably, the CMD said adding they were likely to come down further by at least 50 basis points.
Several banks across the world were facing the threat of extinction, Sundararajan said adding however that banks in our country were safe because of the Reserve Bank's policies.
Banks are willing to take up the responsibility of propelling the country's economic growth, he said.
