Seeking political stability and development in Nepal, top Indian leaders have highlighted the need for a national consensus government in the Himalayan state to take the peace process to a logical end.

Caretaker Prime Minister G P Koirala, who was in New Delhi yesterday en route to Kathmandu from the Sri Lankan capital Colombo, met Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee, BJP leader L K Advani and Samajwadi Party's Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The Indian leaders emphasised on formation of a government based on national consensus and expressed best wishes for Nepal's political stability and democratisation process, the Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Aditya Baral said.

They also praised Koirala's leadership qualities and the role played by the octogenarian leader during Nepal's democratic transition.

"The Indian leaders underlined the need for political understanding and a consensus government to take the ongoing peace process to a logical end and lead the country towards political stability, development and prosperity," Foreign Minister Ramsharan Mahat said upon arrival from Colombo where the Nepalese leaders had gone to attend the SAARC summit.

Their comments came as four major parties here, including Koirala's Nepali Congress, agreed in principle to form a national government led by Maoists, who had emerged the largest group in the landmark April 10 Constituent Assembly polls.
