Indian merchandise exports leap 27% to $70 billion

 "More than the exchange rate variations, the significant increase in exports during the current financial year has been on account of the growing competitiveness of the Indian manufacturing sector ," Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath said.  In February 2005 alone, exports were valued at $6.7 billion.  The top 10 products in India's exports list include textiles accounting for 18.86 per cent of total exports, gems and jewellery (accounting for 16.56 per cent), engineering goods (16.41 per cent ); chemicals and related products (15.43 per cent), agriculture and allied products (8.39 per cent); petroleum products (5.5 per cent), ores and minerals (3.69 per cent); leather and manufactures (2.74 per cent); and marine products (2.08 per cent).
