"Indian Red Cross Society has sanctioned relief to the tune of Rs 60 lakhs for the survivors of the cyclone in Myanmar," S P Agarwal, secretary general of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), said addressing a function here on the occasion of World Red Cross Day. He said a number of Myanmarese are still missing.

"It is a manifestation of the fear that the climate change is leading to increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events," he said. He noted that the rising number of disasters due to climate change is threatening the survival of mankind. Emphasising the need to plant more trees, he said, this would help in the reduction of global warming.

"We have started a National tree planting campaign across the country and already written to state governments to plant more trees," he added. "Planting a tree is a simple gesture, yet a strong symbol of sustainable development as future generations shall reap fruits and find shadow under them," he added.
On the occasion, IRCS also entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with World Health Organisation to address public health issues as both share similar concern for the betterment of vulnerable population.
