Leader of the Opposition in Gujarat assembly Amarsinh Chaudhary criticised the Narendra Modi government for "the decline in the industrial sector" in the state.

Speaking at the valedictory session of 'Udhyog 2004' organised by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) in Surat, Chaudhary alleged that after the Narendra Modi government came to power in Gujarat, the state had lost its prominent position in the sector.

"Industrialisation of the state is serious business. The government should take the initiative and come forward," he said.

Chaudhary said the textile industry of Surat was facing problems and the diamond industry is reeling under inadequate infrastructure.

"Surat should have an airport at the earliest. The state government seems to be the least interested. The Hazira port should also be developed. But it seems nothing is being done," the former chief minister said. Many small units, mainly in the chemicals, pharmaceuticals and dyeing sectors, have closed down, he said.

On the power front, as against the demand for 9,040 mw, the total power production is 7,352 mw, and there is a shortage of 1,688 mw, he said.

"The state government should initiate steps to ensure that Gujarat recovers from this decline," he said.

State Finance Commission chairman Dhirubhai Shah stressed the need for increasing the scope of service-oriented industries. SGCCI President Ashok Shah said, "Such fairs are like bridges between the manufacturers, traders and the consumers."

Essar Steel Ltd bagged the first prize in the overall category for its stall at Udhyog 2004.

Bela Fernandez of Essar received the award from Dhirubhai Shah.
