Industrial units across the national capital today went on an indefinite strike protesting against the Delhi government's decision to close the establishments running in non-conforming areas.

The industrial units were on strike from today and as part of the agitation the manufacturers held demonstrations, Joginder Talwar, secretary, Delhi Manufacturers' Federation (DMF), an umbrella body of over 50 industrial associations in the capital, said.

Manufacturing units all over the city, from trans-Yamuna areas like Vishwas Nagar, Shahdara and Mandoli to outer Delhi areas like Rithala and Haiderpur, are taking part in the strike, Talwar said.

"The Delhi Assembly passed a resolution in july for declaring areas with more than 70 per cent manufacturing units as industrial zones. But the government is now dilly-dallying on it and industries continue to be forced to close down," the DMF secretary said.

He said the manufacturers were also not happy with the facilities provided to them in the industrial areas they were being shifted to talwar claimed that while there were 1.5 lakh non-conforming units in the city, there were only 16,000 plots available.

He said the manufacturers would go on an hunger strike if their demands were not met.
