The Nashik Industries and Manufacturers' Association (Nima) have decided to form an auto cluster of small & medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Nashik region to make the local auto industry competitive globally.

Auto majors such as Mahindra and Mahindra have agreed to support the initiative. The cluster will help local auto ancillary manufacturers to standardise manufacturing norms and processes, minimise production costs and to make their business competitive, said, Vivek Gogatge, president, Nima.

The concept of industrial cluster has recently taken roots in Nashik. After Crompton Greaves and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) this is the third cluster of SMEs in the Nashik industrial area.

"We have started chalking out the project details. Options have been kept open for all industries willing to participate in the cluster. Big units such as Mahindra & Mahindra have also promised support for the proposed cluster," said Gogatge.

The cluster will be formed under Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme (IIUS) of the central government he said. Under the scheme, the government gives 75 per cent financial assistance of the total project cost, subject to a ceiling of Rs 50 crore.

Fifteen per cent of the total project cost is financed by the stake-holders of the related cluster, while the rest amount (10 per cent) is contributed by the local authority.

"We have already met the Commissioner of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) for its participation in the project," said Gogatge.

"The NMC administration is committed for the development of the local industries. Nima has still not sent us a proposal for formation of auto cluster. We will consider about our ten per cent contribution of the total project cost after Nima submits such proposal," said Vinita Singhal, commissioner, NMC.
