Inflation Rises To 5.21%

The rate of inflation once again crossed the 5 per cent mark to 5.21 per cent for the week ended June 21, compared to 4.97 per cent in the previous week and 2.74 per cent in the corresponding period last year.

The rise was on account of a rise in the prices of primary and manufactured products, though the index for fuel, power, lights and lubricants remained unchanged. Inflation had fallen by 0.08 per cent to reach 4.97 per cent for the week ended June 14.

According to provisional data released by the government, the wholesale price index for all commodities rose 0.3 per cent to 173.8 during the week ended June 21, from 173.2 in the previous week.

The final WPI for the week ended April 26 stood at 173.7, compared to the provisional level of 172.8 with the rate of inflation revised to 6.7 per cent against the provisional mark of 6.14 per cent.

During the week ended June 21, the index for the primary articles group rose 0.7 per cent to 184.5 from 183.2 in the previous week. The index for food articles rose 0.9 per cent to 186.4 from 184.8 in the previous week due to higher prices of fruits and vegetables, eggs, jowar, rice, wheat, ragi, arhar, condiments and spices. The index for non-food articles rose 0.3 per cent to 184.9 from 184.3 in the previous week.
