Inflation Rises To 5.32%

An increase in the price of primary products resulted in a 0.11 per cent increase in inflation, which touched 5.32 per cent during the week ended June 28. Prices of manufactured products rose 0.1 per cent, while the index for fuels remained the same during the period.

Inflation was estimated at 5.21 per cent during the week ended June 21 and 2.67 per cent in the corresponding period last year. According to the provisional wholesale price data released by the government, the wholesale price index (WPI), based on 1993-94 prices, rose 0.2 per cent to 174.1 during the week ended June 28, compared to 173.8 in the previous week.

The final WPI for the week ended May 3 has been revised to 173.8, compared to the provisional level of 172.4 and the inflation rate, calculated on a point-to-point basis, was also revised to 6.89 per cent as against the provisional level of 6.03 per cent.

The primary articles group was responsible for the rise in inflation for the week ended June 28. The index for this category increased 0.5 per cent to 185.5 during the week on account of a 11 per cent rise in prices of food products, including tea, fruits and vegetables.

The index for manufactured products, which accounts for over 60 per cent of the WPI, rose 0.1 per cent to 154.1 compared to 154 during the week ended June 21.

The rise was on account of higher prices of textiles, rubber and plastic products, non-metallic mineral products, basic metals, alloys and metal products and transport equip ment.
