Inflation touched 5.55 per cent for the week ended June 5, against 5.03 per cent in the previous week, because of the rise in the prices of food and manufactured articles, including metals. |
The wholesale price index for the week ended June 5, rose 0.6 per cent to 182.7 to 181.7 for the previous week. |

"The rise in inflation is because of seasonal factors. For instance, vegetable prices are seeing an increase. A high inflation is always a cause for worry. India is an inflation averse economy. Since inflation is over 5 per cent, the government is not very happy but we are not losing our sleep over it," Ashok Lahiri, economic adviser to the finance ministry, said. |

Among primary articles, the index for food articles rose 0.4 per cent to 186 from 184.5 for the previous week, on account of higher prices of poultry chicken, fruits and vegetables, which increased two per cent each and urad, milk, tea, gram, condiments and spices which went up one per cent each. |

Lower prices of sunflower, soyabean, rape, mustard and groundnut seed led to a fall in the index for non-food articles by 0.4 per cent to 192.3 for the week ended June 5. |

The prices of fuel, light and lubricants rose 0.2 per cent to 265.5 from 264.9 for the previous week because of higher rices of naphtha and furnace oil, which rose four per cent and two per cent, respectively. |

Among the manufactured products, the prices of basic metal alloys and metal products rose 5.4 per cent to 194.7 from 184.8 for the previous week. |

The sharp rise in metal prices was on account of rise in prices of blooms, bilets and slabs by 30 per cent, angles, channels and section by 27 per cent and joist and rolls by 16 per cent. |

The prices of steel sheets, plates and strips, however, declined four per cent. |

Similarly, prices of oil cakes, imported edible oil, groundnut oil and mustard oil fell during the week. The prices of chemicals and chemical products, rubber also slipped, while the prices of textile, including dhotis, sarees and cotton yarn, increased marginally. |
