A host of infrastructure works now in progress are expected to place the heritage city of Mysore on a better footing.
The ongoing infrastructure projects fall under the Rs 100 crore Chief Minister’s Special Grant (CMSG) schemes and the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Reconstruction Mission (JNNURM).
In the Rs 100 crore CMSG schemes, 126 works have been completed out of the 136, while the remaining 10 are in progress. While these works fall under the first installment of the CMSG, the action plan submitted for the second installment of Rs 100 crore have been approved in the respect of Rs 73.94 crore.
Of the Rs 73.94 crore, Rs 5 crore was set apart for last year’s Dasara works and all 33 works taken up were completed. Similarly, Rs 10 crore was earmarked for this year’s Dasara. Of the 77 works undertaken, 17 have been completed. The rest are in their different stages of progress.
Details have been revealed for the first time on the progress under JNNURM under which Mysore is a beneficiary of the Central funds for developing heritage and other works. Two schemes, amounting to Rs 1,149.33 crore have been approved by the Centre under JNNURM; the first tranche being Rs 890.89 crore under the Urban Infrastructure and Governance (UIG) schemes and the second Rs 258.44 crore under the Basic Service to the Urban Poor (BSUP) schemes.
Ten schemes sanctioned for Rs 890.89 crore are being executed by the Mysore City Corporation, Mysore Urban Development Authority, Karnataka State Transport Corporation, Karnataka Urban Water Supply & Drainage Board and the Slum Clearance Board. Under the BSUP, four schemes are being executed through the Mysore City Corporation and the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board.

Though Rs 890.89 crore were sanctioned under the UIG schemes, the amount so far released accounts for less than 50 per cent, Rs 416.32 crore. The position is worse under the Rs 258.44 crore BSUP as the amount released is only Rs 109 crore. However, the financial progress achieved under the two schemes account for Rs 682.11 crore though Rs 525.32 crore is the total amount sanctioned, it is claimed.
JNNURM works under progress comprise of Rs 194.54 crore restructuring water supply system, Rs 108.81 crore Kabini water supply scheme which is expected to be completed by June, 2012, Rs 85.25 crore basic infrastructure development for city transport system, most of the works are expected to be completed by mid-2012, Rs 29.85 crore waste management system, Rs 100 crore storm water drainage restoration scheme which is likely to be completed by next March, Rs 39.45 crore core heritage area development, and rehabilitation works in select slums in the city.
Apart from these major fundings, the state has sanctioned Rs 12.10 crore under the State Financial Commission grants for development works in the Chamaraja Assembly constituency. While 17 works are in progress, tenders are invited for 15 works.
The progress of these works were reviewed at a meeting presided over by District In-charge Minister S A Ramadas on December 2.
