The Bangalore police prevented a major terror attack on IT campuses in the city by nabbing a suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba operative today.

According to the police, an AK-47 assault rifle, 300 rounds of ammunition, five hand grenades, a satellite phone, SIM cards and maps indicating the locations of IT majors Infosys and Wipro and the Bangalore airport were recovered from him.

"We arrested him while he was coming to the city in a private bus from Hospet (north Karnataka town), following a tip-off from the Intelligence Bureau," Bangalore City Police Commissioner Neelam Achuta Rao told reporters here.

The terrorist has been identified as Imran alias Bilal (32). He had visited Pakistan several times and was handed over the satellite phone in that country, Rao stated. IT companies have been asked to beef up security around their facilities.

In the last 12 months, Imran is the third terrorist to be apprehended by the police on suspicion of plotting to attack software giants. However, the motives of such terrorists have been questioned within the police department itself.

A few months ago, two terrorists with plans to cause widespread harm in the state were apprehended in Mysore. The police had claimed that the duo planned to plant bombs in software parks.

However, not much progress has been made in the investigations. The two accused have been lodged in a Karnataka jail.

Last March, another alleged terrorist was picked up in Bangalore. "Investigations in the last three cases are heading nowhere. The police are hitting a dead-end in all the so-called profile cases," a senior officer admitted.

He pointed out that it had become a practice for terrorists to name software giants as the target of attack.

"But how much of that is true will remain unanswered till investigations are completed," he added.
