Noted dancer Mallika Sarabhai, who is making her electoral debut as an independent against BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani from Gandhinagar, has roped in actor Irrfan Khan of the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaires fame to campaign for her.
The actor has been campaigning in Gandhinagar since Sunday, where the polling will be held on April 30.
"A person's integrity and urge to work for the welfare of society is my priority and hence I have decided to support her," Irrfan told PTI. However, the actor admitted that he had never met Sarabhai before though he had heard and read a lot about her.
Expressing unhappiness over criminals entering the fray, he called for debarring people from electoral politics with such background.
"A person facing even a single criminal case should not be allowed to enter politics," he said.
The actor also expressed satisfaction that people like Mallika Sarabhai and Shashi Tharoor have entered the fray as current politicians, he said, don't have the urge to serve people.
Sarabhai had won the Sangeet Natak Academy Award for her contribution to Gujarati cinema and was recently honoured with the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Earlier, actor Om Puri has also campaigned for her in the Gandhinagar constituency.
