In a directive to basic operators providing leased circuits and last mile connectivity, Trai has done away with distance-based tariffs. This will mean that irrespective of where the basic operator is offering connectivity to the ISP, there will be a flat fee.
According to sources in the ISP sector, some basic operators deliberately gave the interconnection at a far-off exchange in order to charge a higher fee.
