IT services made essential in West Bengal

 State chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, while announcing the policy, said the move stemmed from the fact that the nature of work was primarily export oriented and hence the need for round-the-clock operations of the IT sector.

 IT units would also be exempt from restrictive provisions of the Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, 1963 to enable round-the-clock operations without disruptions, he said.

 Further, the state government made changes to boost the growth of IT in the state drawing upon its geographical proximity with countries like Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, to support IT companies in evolving multi-country business continuity plans.

 The support would be in the form of assisting companies in discussions with these countries. Such plans would envisage an alternative country
