Italy is looking forward to join hands with India for carrying out projects in the field of biotechnology, Scientific Counsellor Embassy of Italy (New Delhi) Lidia Szpyrkowicz has said.

Italy, which is carrying out several such projects, has invited fresh proposals for research collaboration from Indian scientists and researchers working in the field of Biotechnology, she said at the three-day international conference on "Genomic Sciences-Recent Trends" here yesterday.

"Italy is strong in the field of biotechnology, but the country lacks certain materials such as metals to expand the horizon. India could collaborate with Italy," she said at the conference, organised by Madurai Kamaraj University.

Stating that Italy began research agreements with India in 1978, she said "new projects will be invited and the Indian scientists can use the opportunity".

Italy also plans to start joint PhD programmes with institutes in India, she said.

Vice-Chancellor of the University R Karpaga Kumaravel said the institution would start PG programme in M.Sc (nanoscience) for which syllabus had been prepared.
